HIT the GYM

I had this conversation some time back and I think it is nice to share.
There are a lot of people going to the gym to workout and the crowd gets younger and younger. It has become a norm that everybody should be going to the gym. What is your opinion of your partner if he/she always goes to the gym?
The first impression that I have is that my girl is going to look hot, why not? I will totally support my girl. Especially when I go to the gym with my girl, all the gazes from all the high testosterone guys at my girl boost my ego even more.

Going to the gym is a good thing, but what I am more concern are those who gym without proper knowledge.

There are generally 2 types of training that we can do in the gym.

  1. Muscular Endurance
  • Refers to the ability to perform a certain muscular movement for a prolonged period of time (e.g. running for an hour, performing 100 squats)
  • Types of muscles used,
    • Mainly Type 1 (slow twitch) muscle fibers
    • Responsible for endurance (e.g. 1hour of running)
  • Types of exercises,
    • Light weight
    • High repetitions
  • Resulted body type,
    • Lean
    • Tone
  1. Muscular Strength
  • Refer to the ability to exert force against resistance (e.g. Sprinting, performing 100kg bench press)
  • Types of muscles used,
    • Mainly Type 2 (fast twitch) muscle fibers.
    • Divided into Type 2A and 2B muscle fibers.
    • Type 2B responsible for short, explosive movements (e.g. jumping).
    • Type 2A exhibit both characteristics of Type 1 and 2B (e.g. long sprint)
  • Types of exercises,
    • Heavy weight
    • Low repetitions
  • Resulted body type,
    • Muscular
    • Bulky
Different type of training will lead to different body type. The most common reason why people are going to the gym because they are getting vain. They want to look good. There is nothing wrong with that, I want to look good too. But looking good is very subjective to every individual. Some might like big muscular body, some just prefer a petite lean body. It doesn't matter either. The problem lies when they are unaware of the consequences.

Many people, male especially, like muscular body type so that they look good in any clothing they wear. They build up muscles and are able to lift 100kg bench press and wow the ladies with the V-shaped body. That is impressive because I cannot even do that. But when you ask them to lift up the hands high in the air, you will realize that they cannot even straighten their hands. They forgot about flexibility. This type of training is not functional. Yes, they can carry heavy weights and look super hot, but can they play a proper soccer or basketball game? Probably not.

These group of people usually look at short term goals, so they take protein shake, control their diet and bulk up within a very short period of time. How long can they last? Remove their protein shake, and they will start shrinking in size. What's worse, they stopped their training regime and what will become of the muscles? They are probably going to shrink and fats will eventually fill up those loose spaces. When that happens, all the ugly stretch marks from muscle hypertrophy over the short period will show.

This group of people might not be the majority of the population but I think they are getting more significant and it has to be stopped.

Without proper knowledge to training and missing components of overall fitness. They will be prone to injury and end up hurting themselves. Injury means stoppages to training and many of them end up going back to sedentary life again. What's the point?
